Here's a good article from http://www.SuperBeetles.com that will help you select a good performance exhaust for your Beetle http://www.superbeetles.com/performance101/may.htm

CIP seems to have a good selection of performance mufflers http://www2.cip1.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=1523&Click=30260

I noticed that they don't list what year Beetle they fit but I'm sure that the ones with the heater boxes would be okay. I'd contact then to be 100% before ordering.

It won't work Wayne.  Starting in '75 they went to FI and the entire exhaust system changed with it.  The heater boxes will no longer work with 'traditional' aftermarket exhaust systems and the same goes for the EGR valve.  You really have NO options at all short of a custom made system or ditching the FI and downgrading back to a carb setup.  --Ryan

I sort of figured that the FI might have something to do with the lack of systems available. My Super has had the EGR system removed and the hole in the muffler welded shut.

If your FI system is working then I wouldn't mess with it.  As for what you might replace it with that will work with future upgrades, well it depends on what those upgrades are.  --Ryan

Had the same problem with my '75 Super. No decent exhaust. The only difference with the FI exhaust, besides the extra smog crud and the one exhaust hole in the apron, is, they reroute the other two cylinders exhaust back into the heater boxes for added heat. And yes it does heat!
If you don't have any DEQ issues, then either go to "J" pipes if you don't need the heat or try buying a set of used or new '72 "style" heater boxes and then you can use the earlier style exhaust. (My wife has a '72 Super, so that was just as good a year as any for me.) You will have to cut some new holes for the exhaust (I bought the twin pipe style) unless you go with one of the "quiet pack" style that goes under the apron.
If your '77 engine bay is the same as my '75 and you do go to Duel Carbs be aware that you WILL have to take the Carb/ Intakes off when you pull/replace the motor.
As far as i know I THINK someone mentioned on one of the other forums that a 1640cc is all the farther the stock FI could go??
