I am looking at buying a 81 vw westy and I was told by a friend that I should buy a liquid cooled engine, (84 or newer) Is this B.S. or should I take heed????

By the time the last of the air-cooled were being put into the vans, they were damned good engines.  The first of the water cooled were not as good and provided a whole lot of interesting new problems for owners.  Read the "Lemon-Aid" books by Phil Edmonston.  The sections for VW in the mid 1980's were just brutal.  On an older vehicle you may be well advised to assess each van as an entity unto itself.  Your number one concern should be body condition, not engine.

I'd rather have a partial bottle in front of me than a partial frontal lobotomy.
