What does it mean when there is no number stamped on the engine where it is supposed to be?  I can't find any number on my engine.

I would guess that the engine or case has been replaced.

I was told by a mechanic that it looked like the engine had been replaced, but I thought all engines should have a number.  Did only the German's put numbers on their engines?

Replacement cases will not have numbers.  Mexican cases will have " Hecho en Mexico" cast into them.  They too are not numbered.  I believe that this holds true with Brasilian cases which are just stamped " Brasil ".  While none of these measure up to the quality of German factory original they are not as bad as some have made them out to be.  MY72BUG
I'd rather have a partial bottle in front of me than a partial frontal lobotomy.
