I have a 1974 super beetle that i am putting new pressure valves  in.
The new ones, have a smooth side, and one with a groove in it.
The ones i pulled out are booth smooth, can any one tell me witch one goes were.
It is a 1974 super beetle 1600

The one without the groove goes in the front of the engine, towards the front of the car, the other one goes in the rear with the longer spring.

Yes, thats correct...
the grooved oil pressure valve was used in all 1500 engines.
it gave More oil pressure than the non grooved type.
that was the only oil pressure valve on a 1500 engine..
