Hi, all. I just found this site. Hope I can be a contributer in the future. I am build ing a buggy with a 1600. I just found it has a stripped spark plug hole. What is the correct way to repair?  Can it be done without removing the head??  Thanks  Henry

You can try to retap the hole and see if the threads clean up or install a helicoil to correct the problem.

HeliCoils can present problems in a sparkplug hole (and although they can be istalled without removing the head, it's challenging) - I would recommend instead using a TimeSert.  http://www.timesert.com/  It's $100+ for the kit but you can rent it from aircooled.net...use the 7/16" reach insert, not the 1/2".

Do not use any other type of solid insert, though - they have a coarse, poorly-formed outer thread that won't hold in the head, and are larger in diameter so once you've opened the hole up for one you no longer have the option of a TimeSert or HeliCoil.

Grease the tap liberally so that the majority of the chips stick to it; when you're done spot-facing the head for the insert's flange, fire the engine up on three cylinders for ~15 seconds to eject any debris that may have fallen inside before installing the insert & plug.
